Medical billing errors occur more often than many people realize. That is why you want to go over your statements very carefully. You should be getting an itemized bill for the services. If the costs aren’t broken down you need to contact that provider and request one. Then you want to go over each line of it. If you find anything that seems out of the ordinary or that has been double charged you want to make note of it.

When you find such medical billing errors you need to notify that billing department as soon as you can. You can do this over the phone, by email, or by mail. If you do it by phone or in person you need to document who you speak with. If the problem can’t be resolved ask to speak with a supervisor. If you use email keep a copy of all of your contacts and scan a copy of your bill to send as an attachment. If you are using mail, copy the bill and document on it what you believe are the mistakes.

Give the agency some time to explore their own records to see if medical billing errors did occur. Five business days is enough time for them to get back to you. If they don’t you need to contact them again. You want to be pleasant but you also need to remain firm in your follow up with your account. You certainly don’t want to end up paying a dime more than you should.

When you send in payments for medical bills, keep good notes. Document how much you paid, the date that it was paid, and even a check number or the last four digits of the credit card that were used. When you get your new statements make sure that you have been properly credited for each payment as well.

Do your part to help avoid medical billing errors as well. When you send in a payment have the remittance stub of the bill to submit with it. You should also put your account number on the check too so that it gets credited to the proper account. Many people have similar names and if the clerk is in a hurry they may not take time to ensure they have the right account before they post it.
